14 of 14 programs
Portugal
Digital Nomad Visa (D8)
Minimum โฌ3,680/month (4x Portuguese minimum wage of โฌ920 as of 2026). Add 50% for spouse, 30% per child.
One of the most established nomad visas in Europe. The path to permanent residency is a major draw, though the citizenship timeline has lengthened significantly in 2026. Slow processing and income requirement are real barriers โ plan ahead.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (6)
- Processing times are slow โ apply 2โ3 months before you plan to arrive
- Must apply at a Portuguese consulate in your home country, not on arrival
- The original NHR tax regime has ended โ replaced by the IFICI program with stricter eligibility
- Portugal's nationality law changed in 2026 โ citizenship path now extended from 5 to 10 years for most applicants
- Family members can only be included after 2 years of legal residence (reduced to 15 months if couple cohabited for 18 months prior)
- You must spend 183+ days in Portugal to establish tax residency
๐ Requirements (7)
- Proof of remote income of at least โฌ3,680/month from outside Portugal
- Valid health insurance covering Portugal
- Clean criminal record from your home country
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal (rental or ownership)
- NIF (Portuguese tax number) โ get this before applying
- Bank statements showing consistent income for 3โ6 months
- Minimum โฌ11,040 in savings recommended

Spain
Digital Nomad Visa
Minimum 200% of Spanish minimum wage (~โฌ2,646/month as of 2024). No more than 20% of income from Spanish clients.
Solid visa with a good tax incentive via the Beckham Law. More straightforward than Portugal's D8 if your income is clearly from non-Spanish sources. The 20% Spanish client rule is the main trip wire.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- The 20% Spanish client income rule is a hard restriction โ check your client list carefully
- University degree or equivalent work experience required โ not all applicants will qualify
- Beckham Law offers a flat 24% tax rate for first 4 years โ get tax advice before applying
- Barcelona and Madrid accommodation costs have risen significantly
๐ Requirements (7)
- Proof of remote employment or freelance income
- Employing company must have been operating for at least 1 year
- No more than 20% of income from Spanish clients
- Criminal background check
- Valid health insurance
- Proof of accommodation
- University degree or 3 years relevant professional experience

- Program availability has changed over time โ verify current status before applying

Estonia
Digital Nomad Visa
Minimum โฌ4,500/month gross โ the highest income requirement in Europe.
The world's first digital nomad visa but now outcompeted by more flexible options. The income threshold is steep. Worth it specifically if you want EU access and earn well above โฌ4,500/month.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (5)
- The โฌ4,500/month income requirement is the highest in Europe and excludes many nomads
- Does not include family members
- Non-renewable โ must leave after 1 year
- Estonia's e-Residency program is entirely separate and does not give the right to live there
- Tallinn costs have risen significantly โ no longer as affordable as it once was
๐ Requirements (6)
- Proof of remote employment or business ownership
- Minimum โฌ4,500/month gross income
- Valid health insurance
- Proof of accommodation in Estonia
- Clean criminal record
- Apply at Estonian embassy in home country

Colombia
Digital Nomad Visa (Nรณmada Digital)
Minimum 3x Colombian minimum wage (SMLMV). As of 2026 this is COP ~$5,252,715/month (~$1,400 USD). Each month must individually meet the threshold โ no averaging.
Still one of the most accessible formal nomad visas in Latin America despite the income requirement rising in 2026. Medellรญn is genuinely excellent. The no-averaging rule and health insurance duration requirement are the two main things that trip up applications.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (6)
- Income requirement has risen โ as of 2026 it's ~$1,400 USD/month, up from earlier estimates of $750
- The no-averaging rule is strict โ each individual month must clear the threshold, not your average
- All-risk health insurance must cover the full visa duration โ not just 12 months
- US citizens need an FBI background check valid for only 3 months โ time this carefully
- Does not lead to permanent residency
- Tax residency triggered after 183 days in Colombia โ get tax advice if staying the full 2 years
๐ Requirements (8)
- Proof of remote income of at least 3x Colombian minimum wage (~$1,400 USD/month as of 2026)

Mexico
Temporary Resident Visa
Minimum 300x daily minimum wage (~$2,590/month as of 2024). Most nomads use the 180-day tourist entry instead.
Mexico gives most Western passports 180 days on arrival โ the most generous tourist entry in Latin America. For longer stays the Temporary Resident Visa is the path. Mexico City is one of the best nomad cities on earth right now.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (5)
- Most nomads just use the 180-day tourist entry โ Mexico is exceptionally generous on arrival
- The Temporary Resident Visa must be applied for before you arrive
- Income requirement changes periodically with minimum wage updates
- No formal digital nomad visa exists โ this is the closest practical equivalent
- After 4 years as temporary resident you can apply for permanent residency
๐ Requirements (5)
- Proof of income of 300x daily minimum wage (~$2,590/month)
- OR proof of savings of 5,000x daily minimum wage in bank account
- Valid passport
- Must apply at Mexican consulate before arrival โ cannot apply in-country

Japan
Digital Nomad Visa
Minimum ยฅ10 million/year (~$58,000 USD). Only available to nationals of countries with a tax treaty with Japan.
Useful specifically for nomads who want to stay 3โ6 months and whose passport country has a tax treaty with Japan. For stays under 90 days, the standard visa-free entry is sufficient for most passports.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- Only available to nationals of tax-treaty countries โ check your country before applying
- Non-renewable โ must leave after 6 months and cannot immediately reapply
- Most Western passports get 90 days visa-free โ the nomad visa only helps for the 90โ180 day window
- Japan is expensive โ $58,000/year goes less far here than in Southeast Asia
๐ Requirements (6)
- Proof of income of at least ยฅ10 million/year (~$58,000 USD)
- Must be a national of a country with a tax treaty with Japan
- Valid health insurance
- Must not work for a Japanese company

South Korea
Digital Nomad Visa (Workation Visa)
Minimum KRW 85 million/year (~$84,960 USD) โ one of the highest requirements globally.
The income requirement makes this inaccessible to most nomads. The 90-day visa-free entry is sufficient for a normal Seoul stint. The formal visa is worth pursuing only if you earn well above the threshold and want a full year in Korea.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- Income requirement (~$85,000/year) is one of the highest of any nomad visa globally
- Does not include family members
- Non-renewable after 1 year

Good option for nomads who want Central America with reliable infrastructure and safety. Pricier than Colombia or Mexico but offers excellent nature, stable democracy, and a well-developed expat community.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- Processing time of 30โ60 days is slow compared to other programs
- Birth certificate with apostille adds time and cost to preparation
- Costa Rica is more expensive than the rest of Central America
- English is less widespread and infrastructure more variable outside San Josรฉ
๐ Requirements (5)
- Proof of income of at least $3,000/month from foreign sources
- Health insurance valid in Costa Rica
- Clean criminal background check
- Birth certificate with apostille
- Apply at Costa Rican consulate in home country

Indonesia
Second Home Visa
The bank balance requirement makes this impractical for typical nomads. Most people use the 30-day visa-free entry plus one 30-day extension for Bali. The Second Home Visa is for wealthier long-term residents.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- The $130,000 bank balance requirement excludes most nomads
- Property investment route requires local legal assistance
- Standard tourist entry (30 days + 30-day extension) is what most Bali nomads use
- Enforcement of working restrictions has tightened in Bali in recent years
๐ Requirements (4)
- $130,000 in a verifiable bank account OR purchase of Indonesian property
- Valid passport with 6+ months validity
- Health insurance
- Apply online through the Directorate General of Immigration

Thailand
Long Term Resident Visa (LTR)
Minimum $80,000/year for the Work From Thailand Professionally category.
Excellent if you clear $80,000/year and want a long-term Thai base. For everyone else the 30-day free entry plus extension plus border run remains the standard nomad approach.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- The $80,000/year threshold excludes most nomads
- Most nomads use the 30-day visa-free entry plus 30-day extension plus border run
- Thailand has repeatedly announced and delayed a lower-income nomad visa โ do not count on it
- The METV (Multiple Entry Tourist Visa) is a practical alternative for medium-term stays
๐ Requirements (5)
- $80,000/year provable income
- Must work for a company established for at least 3 years
- Health insurance with minimum $50,000 coverage
- Clean criminal record
- Employment contract or proof of business ownership

Germany
Freelancer Visa (Freiberufler)
No hard minimum but immigration offices typically expect โฌ3,500+/month to approve. Outcome varies by local office.
Not technically a nomad visa โ more for nomads who want to settle in Germany long-term. Berlin is the most nomad-friendly city for this path. High barrier but one of the best routes to EU residency for freelancers.
โ ๏ธ Gotchas (5)
- Not a nomad visa โ requires you to actually be based in Germany
- Enormous discretion given to local Auslรคnderbehรถrde โ outcomes vary by city

- Qualified profession โ tech, design, writing, consulting prioritized

Argentina
No formal nomad visa โ tourist entry

โ ๏ธ Gotchas (4)
- No formal nomad visa exists โ you enter as a tourist
- Argentina's peso situation means exchange rates fluctuate โ use Wise carefully
- Extending beyond 90 days requires a border run โ Colonia, Uruguay is the most common
- Economic instability can affect daily costs unpredictably
๐ Requirements (3)
- Valid passport
- Onward travel proof sometimes requested
- Tourist entry โ no income or employment proof needed
