Chiang Rai is a small city and its hotel market reflects that. There are no luxury chain hotels of the Bangkok variety and no boutique properties with infinity pools overlooking rice terraces. What it has is a good range of riverfront and garden properties at mid-range prices, and a set of reliable guesthouses in the city centre for budget travellers. Chiang Rai guide

What to look for

Location in Chiang Rai matters less than in Bangkok or Phuket because the city is small enough to cross by tuk tuk in 15 minutes. The main choice is between city-centre convenience and river or garden setting. Riverfront properties on the Kok River north of the centre are the most pleasant bases for a multi-night stay. City-centre guesthouses near the night bazaar suit travellers arriving late or leaving early.

The Hotels

Budget

Baan Bua Guesthouse

Baan Bua is a well-maintained guesthouse in the city centre, within 10 minutes walk of the night bazaar and most of the central temples. The rooms are clean, the staff speak good English, and the breakfast is a simple but solid Thai and Western spread. It is not a resort. It is a reliable base at a fair price, which is what most Chiang Rai visitors actually need.

The rooms facing the garden are quieter than those facing the street. Book directly if possible for the best rate on extended stays.

Mid-range

Nak Nakara Hotel

Nak Nakara is the most consistently well-reviewed mid-range hotel in central Chiang Rai. The pool is a genuine size, the rooms are larger than the price suggests, and the location on Nakorn Pathom Road puts you 5 minutes walk from the night bazaar and 10 minutes from the bus terminal. It handles the standard Chiang Rai visit, two or three nights, without a single logistical complaint.

The breakfast is included and better than the guesthouse standard: a full Thai and Western spread that covers the morning without needing to venture out before 8am.

The Legend Chiang Rai

The Legend sits on the Kok River north of the city centre, in a complex of traditional Lanna-style wooden villas set in a garden that backs directly onto the river. It is the most architecturally interesting hotel in Chiang Rai and one of the most pleasant places to spend a morning in northern Thailand without doing anything in particular. The river views from the breakfast terrace justify the mid-range premium over central guesthouses.

Getting to the city centre requires a 10-minute tuk tuk ride. The property arranges transfers to the main temples and to the airport. For guests who plan to rent a scooter or car, the riverside location is no inconvenience at all.

Boutique

The Riverie by Katathani

The Riverie is the most complete hotel in Chiang Rai: a full-service property on the Kok River with pool villas, a proper spa, and the best dinner service in the city. The architecture draws on northern Thai craftsmanship and the river setting is the best the city offers. It is not a budget property by Chiang Rai standards, but it is significantly cheaper than equivalent properties in Chiang Mai or Bangkok.

The pool villas are the most compelling room type: private plunge pools facing the river, large enough for a three or four night stay without feeling compressed. Book at least 3 weeks ahead for December and January visits.

Booking tips

Chiang Rai is not heavily booked outside peak season. December and January see the highest demand from domestic Thai tourists and international visitors combining it with Chiang Mai. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead for the December to February window. March through May is dry and increasingly hazy from agricultural burning. June to October is the rainy season: quieter and 20 to 30 percent cheaper across all tiers.
