Phuket has thousands of hotels and the quality range is wider than almost anywhere else in Thailand. A boutique property in Rawai and a Patong tower block with the same star rating deliver completely different stays. Beach choice matters more than room quality on this island.

This post covers six hotels across three tiers, chosen for specific travel styles rather than generic quality rankings. Phuket city guide

What to look for in a Phuket hotel

Proximity to your chosen beach is the primary variable. A hotel 1 kilometre from the beach in Phuket heat is not the same as a hotel 1 kilometre from the beach in a European resort town. Check the walking time in Google Maps satellite view, not the listing description. The second variable is pool: Phuket's west-coast beaches have significant surf and rip currents from May to October, making a pool non-optional for half the year.

Lub d Phuket Patong

Lub d's Patong location sits 200 metres from the beach on a side street that avoids most of Bangla Road's noise. Private rooms are available alongside the hostel-format beds, and the design is consistent with the Bangkok property: clean, functional, and better than the price suggests. The 24-hour front desk is practical for late arrivals from the airport.

The location puts you in Patong, which means noise from the entertainment district is audible at night. If Patong's energy does not appeal, Baan Hin Sai in Kamala is a quieter alternative at a similar price point.

Baan Hin Sai Resort

Baan Hin Sai is a small resort on a quiet soi in Kamala, 10 minutes walk from Kamala Beach. The rooms are simple but maintained, the pool is functional, and the surrounding neighbourhood is residential enough that you feel outside the tourist machine. Kamala Beach itself is one of Phuket's most underrated strips: calmer than Patong, cleaner than Karon, and lined with actual restaurants rather than beach-chair operations.

The drawback is transport: Kamala has no real walking infrastructure between the resort and the beach strip, and getting elsewhere on the island requires a Grab or rental scooter.

  • ๐ŸŠ Pool: Yes
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Best for: Budget couples, anyone wanting quiet over Patong energy

Mid-range

Beyond Kata

Beyond Kata sits in the hills above Kata Beach, 5 minutes walk downhill to the sand. The pool has a partial sea view and the rooms are larger than the price suggests. Kata Beach is the best all-round beach on Phuket's west coast: good sand, decent swimming in high season, and a restaurant strip that serves both tourists and the local expat community without the Patong extremes.

The hill location means a noticeable walk back uphill from the beach. Not a problem for one night, but worth knowing for a week-long stay.

  • ๐Ÿ’ป Workspace: Desk in room
  • ๐Ÿณ Kitchen: No
  • ๐ŸŠ Pool: Yes
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Best for: Couples, families, beach-focused stays of 5 to 10 nights

Rawai Palm Beach Resort

Rawai Palm Beach sits in the Rawai and Nai Harn area of southern Phuket, 5 minutes from Nai Harn Beach by scooter and 10 minutes from the Rawai seafood market. The rooms are apartment-adjacent: larger than standard hotel rooms, with enough space for a week-long stay without feeling compressed. The pool is a genuine size and the surrounding neighbourhood is where Phuket's long-term expat residents actually live.

Rawai is the furthest area from the airport and requires a scooter or regular Grab use. For guests who prefer a car or prefer not to ride, factor the transport cost into the budget.

  • ๐Ÿ“ถ WiFi: Free throughout, speed unconfirmed
  • ๐Ÿ’ป Workspace: Desk in room
  • ๐Ÿณ Kitchen: Kitchenette in some room types
  • ๐ŸŠ Pool: Yes, large
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Best for: Remote workers, extended stays, anyone wanting the residential south over tourist Patong

Boutique

Paresa Resort

Paresa sits on the cliffs above Kamala Beach, with an infinity pool that looks directly over the Andaman Sea. The rooms are large, the design is considered, and the position is as good as any hotel on the island for views. It is a genuine splurge property: room rates are significantly above the mid-range bracket and the experience is priced accordingly.

The clifftop position means no beach access on foot. A shuttle to Kamala Beach runs for guests, but it adds a logistical step between you and the water. For those who want the view more than beach proximity, it delivers completely.

  • ๐Ÿ’ป Workspace: Desk in room
  • ๐Ÿณ Kitchen: No
  • ๐ŸŠ Pool: Yes, infinity
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Best for: Honeymoons, anniversary stays, guests who want views over beach access

The Nai Harn

The Nai Harn is the most consistently well-regarded hotel in southern Phuket. It sits directly above Nai Harn Beach, the island's most local-feeling beach and the one least overrun by commercial beach operations. The lagoon pool is large, the design is clean and contemporary, and the beach access is genuine, not a hotel shuttle away.

The main drawback is distance from Phuket Town and the airport. Getting to Patong from Nai Harn takes 40 minutes by Grab. For guests staying in the south and not needing to commute north, this is the best hotel on the island for the price.

  • ๐Ÿ“ถ WiFi: Free throughout, speed unconfirmed
  • ๐Ÿ’ป Workspace: Desk in room
  • ๐Ÿณ Kitchen: No
  • ๐ŸŠ Pool: Yes, lagoon
  • โ˜• Breakfast: Available, not included in base rate
  • ๐Ÿ‘ค Best for: Design-led beach stays, couples, anyone choosing Nai Harn over Patong

Which area to stay in

Patong is the commercial centre and the noisiest option. Good for nightlife access and a wide range of budget accommodation. The beach is wide but heavily commercialised. Kata and Karon are the best family and couple beaches: good sand, surf in season, and a more relaxed atmosphere than Patong without being remote. Kamala is Phuket's most underrated area: quieter, local-feeling, and with a beach that does not have jet ski operators on every 50-metre stretch. Rawai and Nai Harn are where long-term residents and repeat visitors end up: cheaper, residential, and the best base for Phuket if you have a week or more. Full neighbourhood breakdown

Booking tips

High season from November to April sees rates 40 to 80 percent above low-season pricing, particularly at boutique properties. Book 6 to 8 weeks ahead for any Nai Harn or Kamala property in December and January. Low season from May to October delivers genuine value, with good boutique properties available at mid-range prices. The beaches are rougher in monsoon months but the island is a fraction of the crowd.
